Started in May 2004, Great Tastes of Long Island - Gift Baskets For All Occasions opened with two Mother's Day baskets. A business venture of Association for the Help of Retarded Children, Suffolk Chapter (Suffolk AHRC), the idea hatched as a way to combat the outsourcing that plagued Long Island manufacturing companies and had not eluded AHRC Work Centers. By creating it's own enterprise, the work centers would not have to rely solely on the subcontracts of outside businesses to teach valuable vocational skills and work ethics to the more than 600 AHRC vocational training participants. Each gift basket sold from Great Tastes of Long Island - Gift Baskets For All Occasions creates paid opportunities in assembly and packaging jobs for adults with developmental disabilities. The gift basket business is a competitive one but Great Tastes of Long Island - Gift Baskets For All Occasions has flourished by catering to the corporate community as well as the individual buyer.
